Mickley Stud

Mickley Stud comprises 600 acres of deep feeding loam. Large paddocks and a tranquil setting allow the horses room to develop their full genetic potential whilst the gently undulating pasture encourages balance and muscle development.

The land is kept sweet with the help of beef cattle that fatten quickly on the rich pasture.  This produces the most fantastic facility to rear thoroughbreds as the broodmares have access to all the nutrients and minerals that are required to promote good bone growth for their foals from this strong land.

Mickley Stud has 120 boxes split into three separate units. Firstly a unit to house the stallions, then a bespoke foaling unit & lastly a sales preparation complex run by Richard Kent’s partner Clair Lloyd.

Another innovation recently added is a pre-training yard under the management of 1997 Grand National winning trainer Steve Brookshaw.  Here yearlings & store horses are broken and prepared for many top trainers including Donald McCain & John Quinn.

The permanent team who work at Mickley Stud have been with Richard for many years so have a wealth of experience in all departments.

Brood mares can be boarded full time and can therefore be walked into stallions thus giving a considerable saving.

Mickley Stud currently houses 4 class stallions in Beat All, Central Park, Multiplex & 2008/2009 Champion National Hunt sire Overbury.  In 2010 the stallion team will grow to 5 with the addition of smart sprinter Captain Gerrard.

The stud has seen much success in the sales ring.  The best price in 2008 was achieved at the Fairyhouse Derby Sale when the first 3yo Mickley Stud sold by Beat All realised 100,000 Euros to Willie Mullins.

A home bred colt by Beat All, sold as a foal for £25,000, was subsequently re-offered as a yearling to be sold for £57,000 to Richard Hannon thus making his vendor a tidy profit.  It’s highly encouraging to see such a keen demand for his stock.

Whether you have a horse that needs preparation for the sales or wish to purchase a youngster for pin hooking or racing Mickley Stud has the expertise and facilities to do the job to the highest standard.
